| Game 39 - WAS 11, PIT 2 (26-13) Washington dominated the game in all facets. The offense pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits as Miguel Cabrera (9), Brian McCann (7), and Jimmy Rollins (1) all went deep. Shawn Hill pitched eight innings, allowing just one run to even his record at 3-3. McCann's home run in the 8th inning was a grand slam.
Game 40 - WAS 8, PIT 4 (27-13) Colten Willems did double duty in this game as he pitched the Nats to victory and also delivered the big hit. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Willem's double brought in three runs to make it a 5-1 Nationals lead. Willems fell one out short of a complete game as he struggled a bit in the 9th, giving up a couple runs before Jonathan Broxton came on to record the final out. Willems tallied 13 strikeouts. The two most consistent hitters went yard for the Nats in this one, Grady Sizemore for his 12th and PJ Phillips for his 11th.
Game 41 - WAS 7, PIT 6 (28-13) The Nationals' pitching faltered but the high-powered offense battled back to give Washington the series sweep. With the Nats down a run in the 7th, PJ Phillips and Miguel Cabrera would both double and with two outs, Mike Napoli's single brought in Cabrera with the go ahead run. Napoli was 2 for 3 with a walk and Michael Durant hit his fourth homer of the season.
Game 42 - WAS 5, SEA 4 10 inn. (29-13) Washington was excited to host the defending World Champion Mariners as a near sell-out 41,225 fans filled RFK Stadium. Richie Wilhite entered the game in the 9th with a shot at saving the 4-3 ballgame. After striking out Todd Linden on a 107 mph fastball and Rob Johnson on a 104 mph fastball he was one out away as Jose Lopez came to bat. Throwing all fastballs, Wilhite got ahead 0-2 and tried to climb the ladder on Lopez with a 105 mph fastball. Lopez was able to square it up as he took it opposite field to right center for a game-tying home run. Brian McCann continued a stellar day as he brought in the game-winning run in the 10th with an infield single. McCann would end up 4 for 4 on the day with a home run and 4 RBI's.
Game 43 - WAS 16, SEA 2 (30-13) Jimmy Rollins had a career day at the plate as the Nationals pounded Seattle ace Matt Cain. Rollins would go 5 for 5 with a home run and 6 RBI's to easily earn recognition as the star of the game. Michael Durant was 2 for 3 with two walks and a home run and 4 RBI's as he also enjoyed a solid day. Joe Nathan stayed perfect on the year winning his 9th decision in 9 starts giving up two runs through eight innings.
Game 44 - WAS 9, SEA 1 (31-13) Washington extended their winning streak to ten games as they completed the series sweep of the defending World Champs. Sean Hill pitched great allowing one run on six hits for his 4th win of the season. Several Nationals' would enjoy nice days at the plate. Marcos Vechionacci was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a walk, three runs scored and two RBI's. Mike Napoli would go 2 for 4 with a grand slam home run. Grady Sizemore and PJ Phillips would both go 2 for 3 and Sizemore also drove in three RBI's. | |

| Week 7 proved to be another brutal week for the M's losing 2 out of 3 in Toronto then getting swept in D.C. by the Nationals.
Offensively the team did OK the stars of the week were newly signed Jack Wilson(.391/.391/.609,2 2B,1HR), Jose Lopez(.478/.500/.739,1 each 2B 3B HR), and Chris Snelling(.370/.413/.629,1 2B,2HR). Larry Broadway also extended his hitting streak to 8 games.
the lone win was a brilliant game started by John Rheinecker(8IP,5H,0R) and finished by Felipe Delbusto(8th save) | |
