This week was marked on the calendar as a tough one, with a series at 14-11 NYY, and a series at home against the Tigers who started the week 16-9. We went 3-3 for the week... not as good as hoped, but shows we can play with the other contenders of the AL.
Jerome Williams started things out well by going 7.1 Innings and giving up a single run. Ruben Gotay started off what ended up being a great week by hitting his first homer of the week and going 2-5. Next two games were 7-2 and 7-4 losses by Hernandez and Duke, with Gotay going 3-7 with another homer.
The Detroit series was started badly by Travis Chick, and resulted in a bad 9-6 loss. The Orioles won game 2 by a score of 8-6, with Lester struggling. Recently recalled super prospect Eric Hurley stepped in and pitched 4.1 innings of 1 run ball to get the win. Gotay led the offense by going 3-4 with 2 homers. Game 3 was another shootout, with the Orioles coming from 2 down in the bottom of the 7th. The O's scored 3 runs in the 7th and again in the 8th to get the win. Derek Lowe stepped in for the win in this game, and Gotay finished his week off with another homer and a double.
Gotay has been the MVP of the team, and most likely the AL so far this season. In a season where Loney, Hermida, and Delgado were all added this is quite a surprise. Gotay's #'s after 5 weeks... a tie for league leading 12 HR, 37 RBI (2nd), 30 runs scored (2nd) 414ba (1st), 471obp (1st), and 779 slg (1st). This gives him a league leading OPS of 1.250.
Another bright spot is the schedule for the next three weeks, with series against KC, Cleveland, White Sox, Philly, Boston, and the White Sox again. Of these only Philly and KC are close to 500, with both currently at 15-16. Hopefully this will help our much maligned Pythagorean winning percentage.
