Went 7-1 and lost ground in the division as StL has won 10 in a row. Ryan Harvey continues his hot hitting as he is now at .407/.473/.717. Sing had 2 HR and 7 RBI in a game. Next week should be competitive as we have 3 games at SF.

good week for the D-Rays. Fast start by stomping the Blue Jays 17-0. The offense was lead by Jeff Clement who went 2-4 with 2 homers, 2 walks and 5 rbis. Dana Eveland pitched 8 shutout innings striking out 8, surrendering only 1 hit. Fernando Rodney came in a shut the door pitching a perfect 9th. Every D-Ray reached base at least twice, and only Gary Sheffield did not score despite reaching base three times. The D-Rays went on to 2 of the last 3 against toronto and 2 of 3 against the texas ranger. Next week, Tampa gets a preview of life in the AL west playing seattle for 3 games and texas again for 3 games. The D-Rays are 20-12 and 1 game behind the orioles but a check glance at the Pythagorean Record tells us that the DRays should be 23-9 and Baltimore should be 21-11 giving us a 2 game lead.

This week was marked on the calendar as a tough one, with a series at 14-11 NYY, and a series at home against the Tigers who started the week 16-9. We went 3-3 for the week... not as good as hoped, but shows we can play with the other contenders of the AL.

Jerome Williams started things out well by going 7.1 Innings and giving up a single run. Ruben Gotay started off what ended up being a great week by hitting his first homer of the week and going 2-5. Next two games were 7-2 and 7-4 losses by Hernandez and Duke, with Gotay going 3-7 with another homer.

The Detroit series was started badly by Travis Chick, and resulted in a bad 9-6 loss. The Orioles won game 2 by a score of 8-6, with Lester struggling. Recently recalled super prospect Eric Hurley stepped in and pitched 4.1 innings of 1 run ball to get the win. Gotay led the offense by going 3-4 with 2 homers. Game 3 was another shootout, with the Orioles coming from 2 down in the bottom of the 7th. The O's scored 3 runs in the 7th and again in the 8th to get the win. Derek Lowe stepped in for the win in this game, and Gotay finished his week off with another homer and a double.

Gotay has been the MVP of the team, and most likely the AL so far this season. In a season where Loney, Hermida, and Delgado were all added this is quite a surprise. Gotay's #'s after 5 weeks... a tie for league leading 12 HR, 37 RBI (2nd), 30 runs scored (2nd) 414ba (1st), 471obp (1st), and 779 slg (1st). This gives him a league leading OPS of 1.250.

Another bright spot is the schedule for the next three weeks, with series against KC, Cleveland, White Sox, Philly, Boston, and the White Sox again. Of these only Philly and KC are close to 500, with both currently at 15-16. Hopefully this will help our much maligned Pythagorean winning percentage.

Rough Week, but Signs of Improvement

May 9, 2010

PITTSBURGH, PA. (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates were swept yet again to start the week, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Their pitching was solid for the most part, but their offense just couldn't get it going against St. Louis pitching.

"They just kept pounding us inside and we weren't really catching up to them," Shane Victorino, the Pirates center fielder told reporters. "I think I broke my bat like five times in that series. They were tough."

The Pirates did finally have a good series and showed some promise as they beat the San Diego Padres two games to one. Their pitching once again did an acceptable job as their offense finally took off.

"It's great for the club to have a good couple of games like that," Javier Guzman said, who hit one gigantic homerun in the series. "Hopefully we can build from this series and keep the momentum going."

Next on the menu for the Pirates, the Colorado Rockies come into town to duke it out for a three game series. Then they leave for Florida where they'll begin a seven game road trip.
