Struggles Continue for Pirates
May 2, 2010
PITTSBURGH, PA. (AP) - Frustration begins to mount as the Pittsburgh Pirates experienced yet another tough week. After losing all three games to the Reds and two out of three against the Astros, they finished their road trip with a 1-8 record, and a dismal 5-19 on the year so far.
Adding insult to injury, they also lost starting pitcher Wilfredo Ledezma to an ankle stress fracture resulting from a close play at first base. Scrambling to cover first on a ball hit to the first baseman, Wilfredo awkwardly stepped on the bag and ended up injuring his ankle. He continued to pitch until he was later taken out for his ineffective pitching. After the game, he was evaluated by the team's medical staff and it was concluded that he suffered a mild stress fracture in his right ankle.
"It's a big blow to the team," the team's manager said. "When you lose a solid pitcher like Ledezma to an unfortunate injury, it puts a sour taste in your mouth."
The team continues to struggle to cook up a winning recipe, but you can be sure that the young and risky GM is looking for the right ingredients.
"I'm definitely looking for help," Andrew Lizon, the Pirates' General Manager said. "Whether it comes from free agency or from a trade, we'll find what we need."
The last place Pirates finally head back home to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals for a three game set, then the San Diego Padres come into town on Friday for three games.
