CINCINNATI - Don't look now but the Cincinnati Reds are vying for a share of first place in the National League Central Division.
Thanks to a three-game sweep of the Rangers, the Reds are a respectable 15-6 so far in May and now only 6 1/2 back of the first place Cardinals. And the losses? Four of the six have only been by one or two points. And this all has been done with a grueling schedule with only one off-day so far in the month of May.
"I'm really proud of what this team has accomplished so far," said team captain Jhonny Peralta, currently hitting with a .329 average. "They've really stepped up this month, especially with the tough schedule, you know?"
One of the keys to success for the Reds this month has been timely hitting. For example, the game last night featured RBI doubles and singles by Ibanez and Majewski in the top of the ninth to tie the game. And in the top of the tenth, Jason Varitek launched a 3-2 fastball into the upper deck to put the Reds on top. Bauer closed it out with a 1-2-3 inning.
"It's been like that a lot for us, " remarked Majewski. " Last week against the... Braves, yeah. Gark' came off the bench for us and put up a game- winning homer in the 11th. And Iby' put us ahead in the 8th earlier this week. Like I said... yeah, lot's of key late-inning hits."
When asked if they thought they had a shot at the Cardinals and first place in the division, the Reds manager stated, "It's just a game at a time. Win a game, try to take a series. We've been doing that this month. If we can continue with those fundamentals and win series, then sure, we have a realistic shot. That's what we strive for. It's in our blood." | |
