PostSubject: Arbitration cases   Arbitration cases Icon_minitimeTue Apr 17, 2007 5:34 pm

I know in Mogul that players who are arbitration eligible ask for a crap load of money. In the MLB, teams and players both pick a salary that they think each player is worth and they take it to an arbitration hearing. Since the player and their agent have very little leverage, they normally recieve a considerable amount less than what they recieve in Mogul. For example, Justin Morneau recieved around 4 million last year after winning the MVP.

I think we should figure out some way to lower the amount of money for arb eligible players. Maybe we could have one person pretend to be the "player" and post what they think is a reasonable amount. Then the team can post how much they think they are worth. After this is posted, we can have a poll to see how much the league thinks each player is worth.

I know this is complicated, but this is the only way I could think of. Does anyone else have any comments or suggestions?

I would say in some ways this is balanced out by the fact that in Mogul you are always going to win in arb... you can keep reloading the game until you figure out the lowest amount you can offer.

Yes you can, but the salary is still MUCH higher than the player would get in the MLB.

I think this is only more applicable to the better players in our Mogul games....

It includes everyone, backup players ask for 2 or 3 million.

I would think that the problem with this is the # value that is coming up in arbitration is probably tied to the $'s that come up in contract extension negotiations. If one is off the other one probably is too.

If you think the arbitration number is too high release the player to free agency and resign him then. If the number is really way too high you should be able to get him for quite a bit less.

Something that could be making this look off is the fact we're letting the market determine prices on free agency. I think all the lower end free agents are just going to go for less than they would if you signed them to what they are actually looking for in the game, or what they would get as an arbitration figure or contract extension.

The arbitration numbers are supposed to be less than what they would get on the free agent market.

Morneau is in his first year as an arb. player - to get 4 million at that point is extremely high. It does appear that some of the player demands are high - but it only seems to be off by maybe 20% of being realistic.

If Miguel Cabrera hadnt been signed a couple years back, he would have asked for about 11 million in mogul.

Considering his production - that's a legitimate expectation for a guy one year from Free Agency and that good.

I'm not sure if this solves anything but it has come up on the sportsmogul boards. One of these suggests their asking price goes up greatly if you have a lot of cash on hand. In this case since there are no computer teams I wonder if all free agent/arbitration/extension figures aren't influenced by the amount of cash on hand for the league. Also since you have the settings at +20% revenue maybe that factors in as well?

Imo, first year arb eligible players should make about 25% of what they are offered. 45% for second year eligible players, and 65% for third year elgible players.

Also, isnt there a rule that states you have to have 6 years of mlb service to become an mlb free agent?

I'm too lazy to go look for it, but I seem to recall some discussion
on the Mogul forums regarding arbitration and the amount of
free cash a team has. There seemed to be enough evidence
to suggest that teams that more cash received higher dollar-based
arbitration offers. Essentially, people on the forums deduced
that the amount of free cash a team had played into the games
arbitration equation. I'm not sure how realistic that is. Just
thought I'd mention it.
