BIG CHANGES IN MINNESOTA

Minnesota has traded away many prospects, Torri Hunter, Johann Santana and have recieved players such as Nate Robertson, Rich Harden, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Freddy Sanchez, and Mike Gonzalez. The Minnesota farm system has been depleted over the course of these trades, but the Minnesota GM assured the Associated Press today that he will not be trading any more prospects. With the roster that Minnesota is putting out this year, the sky is the limit to this team. This could go down as the greatest Twin team in history and is beginning to look like a start to a dynasty. Move over 61 Yankees, move over 27 Yankees, you could be getting some company.

First Week of Season

Minnesota has gotten off to a very good start this year. They are currently tied for first place with the Detroit Tigers at 5-1. They are 3 games ahead of Chicago and Cleveland with both of them having a record of 2-4. The lowly Kansas City Royals have failed to get a win, dropping them to 0-6 and 5 games out. Minnesotas lineup has gotten out to a great start. They are batting .349! This lineup is getting great 1-9. The best hitters have been Luis Castillo, Jason Kubel, and Justin Morneau. They are all hitting over .450 with at least 2 home runs. As well as their hitting, the Twins pitching has been good as well. Rich Harden has been pitching very well in his short tenure as a Twin. On opening day he pitched 7 innings giving up 2 runs. Last game, was a 8 inning one run masterpiece. Francisco Liriano, Jared Weaver, and Glen Perkins havent had the best starts, but the offense bailed them out 2 out of 3 times giving Liriano the only loss. These three rookies have tremendous talent and could all become top notch pitchers.

In Other News

Twins reliever Juan Rincon was placed on the 15 day disabled list on April 8th. Juan pitched one inning giving up zero runs before a line drive hit him in the wrist. He has a harline stress fracture and should be back around April 25th. Relief pitching prospect Pat Neshek will got his long awaited major league debut after be called up because of Rincons injury.

Freddy Sanchez

Twins third basemen Freddy Sanchez has been signed to a 7 year contract extension at 4.25 million a year with a team option for an 8th year. Sanchez also recieved a no trade clause. When asked why Sanchez was signed to a 7 year extension after only wearing a Twins unifrom for a week, the Twins GM replied, "We feel we should sgin Freddy to an extension ASAP, before he becomes very expensive." Sanchez said he was glad to be a part of a team committed to winning like the Twins. This seems like a perfect match for Sanchez and the Twins.

Trade Rumors

There have been many rumors being spread around concerning the Minnesota Twins. Some reporters have been saying that Liriano, Mauer, and Morneau were being shopped around, but they are not. We just had an exclusive interview with the Twins GM. He said none of the players are avilable. He went on to say that they will be listening to trades concerning Jose Reyes. Jon Lester, Anthony Reyes, and Josh Johnson are names that have been thrown around.

Justin Morneau

There have been confirmed reports that Morneau has just been signed to a 10 year deal leaving him in Minnesota until he is 34. He is guaranteed at least 7 years and the last 3 years are team options. When asked to comment on the extension, the Twins gm said "We are very honored to keep Justin in our teams organization. He is a perennial MVP candidate and is a very good fielding first basemen. We are looking forward to seeing Justin develop as a first basemen and as a Twin. He is a great guy. Its not everyday a player of his caliber is signed to an extension of 6 and a quarter million dollars." Justin Morneau said, "I feel like this is a great oppurtunity to stay in the great baseball state of Minnesota. I gave a hometown discount to sign here and all I can say is Im just glad that Im on such a great team." This seems like a perfect fit for both Minnesota and Morneau. This should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Mike Gonzalez on the way out?

We are getting reports that struggling lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez is on the block. The Twins have said that they will not move him unless they get a good deal. Rumor has it that St. Louis offered Carlos Gonzalez and another un-named prospect, but that was turned down. The Twins will be happy to keep him. They hope he can turn it around and return to top closer form. His career ERA before entering this year has gone up a whole run. That tells you pretty much how Gonzalez has done this season.
